A bin-credible transformation

Marking another significant milestone in our campaign to make Bellville better, the better. bellville. together. waste team proudly installed ten new separation bins across strategic identified nodes in the Bellville CBD area, a testament to our ongoing commitment to promoting responsible waste management practices within the Bellville community.

The bin system was introduced last year, now consisting of thirty sorting bins, aimed to reduce litter and promote waste separation. These newly installed bins represent a valuable addition to the first batch deployed during the start of the better. bellville. together. initiative.

The colour-coded bins—red, yellow, and green—are designed for specific waste categories. Green bins are for food waste and compostable materials, yellow bins for recyclable materials, and red bins for non-recyclable waste destined for landfills.

This project is part of the city-funded place-making initiative – bellville. together. launched late February 2023 – in the Bellville CBD,  geared towards economic growth.

The Palletman, our proud collaboration partner, played an integral part in the creation of these innovative bins. To complement the bin system, PTI cleaners have received training on proper waste separation practices, ensuring efficient waste management.

Two waste diversion solutions have also been implemented including a daily local recycling collection and a local organics collection plan with solid waste management. Together, this has already seen impressive results, with over two tonnes of food waste and recycling diverted from the PTI to landfill.

Since kicking off in February last year, the better. bellville. together. initiative has seen 9 tons of recyclable waste diverted from landfill as well as 52.8 tons of organic waste such as food scraps and garden material from local businesses and civic places. Resources have been recycled locally and used for compost at The Bellville Life Changing Garden.
