Better. bellville. together. public art initiatives continues to uplift Bellville with colour

The Bellville sports complex mural extension along Voortrekker Road not only celebrates community spirit but also vitalises Bellville through public art initiatives bring colour to the area. Led by project manager Alex Jongens and artist Wayne BKS, this project, which commenced on March 26th under the better. bellville. together. campaign, integrates sports and nature elements, including proteas, to showcase unity and pride.

In a collaborative effort, we are proud to partner with the Bellville Sports Complex, enhancing its surroundings with vibrant murals. This public art project was a collaboration between BAZ-ART, an organisation that creates public intersections using urban art and the better. bellville. together. initiative, a groundbreaking City-funded project aimed at revitalising the Bellville region through community engagement and sustainable practices.

This extension is more than just a visual enhancement—it symbolises the vitality of Bellville’s community. Depicting athletes in action against vibrant landscapes, Wayne BKS’s artistry brings scenes to life, embodying resilience, and connection to nature.

Project manager Alex Jongens says, “The mural recently implemented at the Bellville Sports Complex was very well received, so we decided to extend it even further. It is our longest mural to date, stretching 160m. The mural reflects the sports and activities that take place inside the sports complex and for the extension we added natural elements such as fynbos, birds, and bees. The face brick wall was very boring however now it is a colourful and playful wall to drive or walk past.”

Public art initiatives like these play a vital role in revitalising Bellville. By reflecting shared values and aspirations, they foster a sense of belonging and pride among residents. As Jongens emphasises, they represent the community’s collective effort to create beauty and meaning.

The mural was inspired by the Bellville sports Complex and features a mix of plant life, characters and Sports. The mural is a reflection of Bellville and the community, and i added these elements to remind us how beautiful Bellville is, especially with diversity. I hope that everyone will feel welcome and happy when they pass the mural,” says mural artist Wayne BKS’s.

The Bellville Sport Complex mural extension stands as a testament to the transformative power of public art. It not only unites residents and visitors in celebration of community strength but also invigorates Bellville, breathing new life into its public spaces.
