From Books to Bins!

Inspiring Waste Awareness in Bellville’s Youth

From March 25th to 27th, the better. bellville. together. Waste Educators Team, led by Zintle Dotwana, organised a children’s book reading event at the Bellville Library. Partnering with the public library, the team aim was to educate children about recycling and waste sorting.

Throughout the three-day event, children were immersed in a world of learning and fun. The activities were designed to make the concept of recycling easily understandable and enjoyable. From interactive games to hands-on art projects, every aspect of the event was geared towards making a positive impact on the children’s understanding of waste management.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for children to participate in upcycling activities, where they learned to transform waste materials into beautiful pieces of art. These activities not only showcased the creative potential of recycling but also encouraged children to view waste in a new light – as a valuable resource that can be repurposed into something meaningful.

Librarian Geneve Stevens says, “I think the initiative has such a great impact on the lives of people living and working in Bellville by making sure that the area adopts good waste management practices.  Collaborating with better. bellville. together. is great because, as the library, we only read books and do not necessarily educate children on practical ways to clean the environment. Children learn and enjoy practical activities. I really enjoyed the activities, and I am positive that the children will take what they learned during the book reading week and apply it in their schools, home and where they play.”

By empowering children with knowledge about waste management, the initiative laid the groundwork for a more environmentally conscious community in Bellville. These efforts highlight the power of grassroots initiatives in driving positive change.
