Sowing Seeds of Knowledge For Sustainable Waste Management

better. bellville. together. waste team visits Belrail Hardware and Fountain Fish and Chips

In the pursuit of a greener future, the better. bellville. together. team embarked on a mission to nurture sustainable practices within the local business community in Bellville. Led by the dynamic duo team leaders Candice Mostert and Zintle Dotwana, the team set out to visit two of the 26 businesses enrolled in our organics collection program: Belrail Hardware and Fountain Fish and Chips.

On 11 March 2024, the team conducted a re-training session aimed at reinforcing waste management practices and gathering valuable feedback from staff.  The better. bellville. together. initiative is a groundbreaking City-funded project aimed at revitalising the Bellville region through community engagement and sustainable practices.  Since its launch in February 2023, the campaign has already made significant strides in promoting economic development, fostering community cohesion, and enhancing the environmental sustainability of the area.

During the team’s visit, they conducted thorough audits of the kitchen spaces in both Belrail Hardware and Fountain Fish and Chips to assess their food waste production. Additionally, they provided re-training sessions on Bokashi composting, educating staff on its implementation and usage.

The key objective was to further educate their staff on waste management practices. We also took the opportunity to gather feedback on any challenges they may be facing with regards to the buckets, organic collection service, and waste management in general.

This hands-on approach ensures that businesses are equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively manage their organic waste, furthering our collective efforts toward sustainability.

Belrail Hardware and Fountain Fish and Chips stand as beacons of commitment to sustainability in our community. As participants in our organics collection program, these businesses are actively engaged in reducing their environmental footprint by diverting organic waste from landfills.
