Zero Waste Traders – are reducing  waste in Bellville

Amidst the bustling streets of Bellville, our better. bellville. together. team embarked on our regular check-in as part of the ongoing Zero Waste traders trial programme. This project is part of the city-funded place-making initiative – bellville. together. launched late February 2023 – in the Bellville CBD,  geared towards economic growth.

This  city-funded programme stands as a beacon of our commitment to fostering sustainable practices within our local business community. Our overarching goal is to inspire traders to embrace a zero-waste ethos in their daily operations.

The initial trial spanning a dedicated four-month period, represents a collaborative effort between The City of Cape Town and participating traders. Throughout the campaign, the traders have been equipped with eco-friendly packaging solutions and information, empowering them to reduce their environmental footprint while meeting the needs of their customers.

The better.bellville.together. waste team has made six visits to check-in with the Zero Waste traders, to hear feedback on the new eco-friendly packing they are using, each interaction has provided valuable insights.

What has been most heartening to witness is the genuine enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the traders as they embrace this new way of doing business while being mindful of the impact packing has on their environment. From innovative packaging solutions to thoughtful waste management practices, the traders have demonstrated a deep commitment to sustainability.

Equally important is the positive response from customers who appreciate the shift towards eco-conscious practices. The adoption of sustainable initiatives not only aligns with the values of our community but also fosters a sense of pride and responsibility among residents and businesses alike.

Our proud collaboration partner for this project Paul Rubin, the founder of NUDE FOODS a retail organisation with the goal to make plastic-free shopping easy and accessible to the everyday shopper, while supporting local suppliers and other waste-reducing initiatives, has played an integral part in the creation of this trail better. bellville. together. Zero Waste traders programme.

As we progress through the trial programme, we remain steadfast in our support and encouragement of our local traders. Together, we are making the way for a better and more environmentally conscious Bellville, where sustainable packaging  practices are not only embraced but celebrated as integral components of our collective identity. With each visit, we reaffirm our dedication to building a greener future city Bellville for generations to come.
